The Bays of Kekova

The most beautiful bays of Kekova — what each one is good for, in the captain’s own notes.

“Which is the most beautiful bay in Kekova?” is one of the questions we are asked most, and the honest answer is that no such ranking exists. Beauty depends on the person. Some look at how clear the water is, some at the shade, some at how many boats are already anchored there.

So instead of a ranking, here is what each bay is good for.

The order below is the full-day private tour’s. The shared tour covers the same water the other way round — it starts at Çamlık and ends at Karaemlik.

Karaemlik Bay

Some sources write it Karemlik; the correct spelling is Karaemlik. It takes its name from the Karaemlik stream, which reaches the sea right beside the bay.

What makes this place is not the view but the loggerhead turtles. The fresh water brings them here to feed.

You can swim with them or photograph them from the deck. It is the first stop of the day on the private tour and the last on the shared one.

A loggerhead is a wild animal — watch from a distance and do not disturb one that has come to feed.

Tours: full-day private, with dinner, shared.

Buzağılık Bay

The first proper swim of the day happens here. Calm, clean, and usually no other boat at anchor at that hour — what leaving early buys you.

There is a Lycian watchtower on the slope above; you notice it from the water.

Tours: full-day private and with dinner. The other tours do not call here.

And one you cannot swim in: the Sunken City

It belongs on the list, with a warning. A kilometre and a half of underwater remains along the shore of Kekova Island, inside a protected area.

The boat passes on the nearest permitted line and at the slowest speed she will hold. This stop is not swum, it is watched. If you want to swim over ruins, the place for that is Tersane Bay.

Stopping and swimming at the Sunken City is forbidden.

Tersane Bay

The most interesting bay in Kekova, because the remains of a Roman shipyard lie beneath it. The stonework underwater is from the same period as the Sunken City — the difference is that here swimming is allowed.

This is the one place you can swim over ancient remains. Lunch is served in this bay too, at anchor.

Tours: full-day private, with dinner, sunset, marriage proposal. The shared tour does not call here.

Esmeralda Bay

The name describes the colour: green water. On the way back, towards the east. One of the last stops of the day, when the light has softened and the other boats have long since turned for home.

Tour: shared tour only.

The south side of Kekova Island

The least known part of the archipelago. Karaloz Bay and Eğri Liman are on the open-sea side of the island — narrow-mouthed, deep, far more solitary.

They are not on the full-day route. If you want to see them, the Kekova Islands Tour is a separate programme.

Hamidiye Bay

A bay that is not on the route but whose name gets asked about. It is named after the Ottoman cruiser that sheltered here from a storm in 1913.

Which is the most beautiful bay in Kekova?
There is no such ranking; beauty depends on the person. The clearest water is at Akvaryum Bay, swimming over ancient remains is at Tersane Bay, and the loggerhead turtles are at Karaemlik Bay.
Which bay has loggerhead turtles?
Karaemlik Bay. The Karaemlik stream reaches the sea right beside it, and the fresh water brings the turtles there to feed. It is the first stop of the private tour and the last of the shared one.
Where can you swim over ancient ruins?
At Tersane Bay. The remains of a Roman shipyard lie beneath it, and it is the only ruin site where swimming is allowed. Stopping and swimming at the Sunken City is forbidden.
Which bays does the shared tour call at?
Çamlık, Akvaryum, Kaleköy, the Sunken City, Esmeralda, the Pirate Cave and Karaemlik. It runs the route the opposite way round from the private tour, and Tersane Bay is not on it.
Which bay is sheltered on a windy day?
Gökkaya Bay. It has a well-sheltered corner, and once anchored there you barely feel the wind outside.
How do you get to Karaloz Bay and Eğri Liman?
Both are on the open-sea side of Kekova Island and are not on the full-day route. The Kekova Islands Tour is a separate programme that goes there.
Can you swim in the bays of Kekova?
You can swim at almost every cove on the route. The one exception is the Sunken City, which is a protected site the boat passes slowly. To swim over ancient remains, the place is Tersane Bay.
How many bays does the Kekova boat tour call at?
The full-day private tour makes eleven stops, with no clock on any of them. The shared tour calls at fewer and runs the route the opposite way round.
Which bay is lunch served in?
Tersane Bay, at anchor. It is also the only place you may swim over ancient remains, so lunch and the swim happen one after the other.
Which bay is best for snorkelling?
Akvaryum Bay. The clearest water on this coast is there and you can see the bottom. We arrive in the afternoon, once most boats have started back.

Stops that are not bays

Some places on the route are not coves: the Sunken City is a protected site, Kaleköy (Simena) is a village and Üçağız is the second harbour. Myra, the Church of St Nicholas and the Museum of Lycian Civilisations are on land in Demre, before or after the tour.

Demre guide Üçağız

The programme that sees the most bays is the full-day private tour — eleven stops, and no clock on any of them. How long you stay anywhere is your decision.
